L’histoire de l’Agora, cité internationale de la danse commence lorsque Dominique Bagouet exprime à Georges Frêche son désir d’établir le Centre chorégraphique dans cet ancien bâtiment du centre-ville. Il voulait en faire un lieu exclusivement consacré à la danse. Dès 1986, Montpellier Danse monte au coeur de la rotonde, alors appelée Cour des Ursulines, une scène et des gradins pour y montrer les spectacles des chorégraphes invités au festival.
