[FR] Ce géant d’une dizaine de mètres de haut dresse son armature aérienne sur le bastion Saint-Jaume, ancienne fortification Vauban qui protégeait l’entrée du port d’Antibes.

Constitué d’une dentelle de lettres majuscules en acier blanc, il se détache avec délicatesse sur le ciel généralement d’un bleu profond de la Côte d’Azur, évoquant une silhouette humaine aux formes courbes, assise devant la mer, une jambe repliée contre sa poitrine. Sa face est ouverte, les lettres s’y arrêtent soudainement, comme effacées par la beauté du paysage qu’il contemple. A l’image du nomade, les mots cessent et le silence se fait dans l’esprit du spectateur qui se retrouve lui aussi happé par la contemplation.

Jaume Plensa décline ici sa thématique de prédilection : le rapport entre le mot et le corps humain. L’amoncellement incohérent de lettres qui forment le Nomade représenterait une sorte de point zéro de la linguistique, faisant de l’homme une créature qui tiendrait sa consistance d’un langage en perpétuelle évolution.

Plus prosaïquement, cette ouverture introduit de manière inattendue un côté ludique dans cette œuvre à l’intérieur de laquelle on peut pénétrer tout en résistant avec peine à l’envie de l’escalader. De jour comme de nuit (où des projecteurs en illuminent la structure, transformant la statue en lumineux protecteur du port), le Nomade s’intègre parfaitement dans l’horizon maritime, créant une interaction forte avec son environnement.

Exposée en été 2007, la sculpture fait aujourd’hui partie de la collection permanente du musée Picasso d’Antibes. Elle avait d’abord été vendue, mais il semble que sa disparition ait laissé un vide significatif : la ville d’Antibes a obtenu l’aide de l’Etat pour commander la même statue peu de temps après, afin de l’installer cette fois-ci définitivement à cette place qui semble avoir toujours été la sienne.

The incoherent accumulation of letters which form the Nomad would represent a sort of zero point of linguistics, making man a creature that would hold its consistency in a language in perpetual evolution.

More prosaically, this opening unexpectedly introduces a playful side into this work inside which one can penetrate while resisting with difficulty the desire to climb it. Day and night (where lights illuminate the structure, transforming the statue into luminous protector of the port), the Nomad fits perfectly into the maritime horizon, creating a strong interaction with its environment.

Exhibited in summer 2007, sculpture is now part of the permanent collection of the Picasso Museum in Antibes. It had first been sold, but it seems that its disappearance left a significant vacuum: the city of Antibes obtained the aid of the State to order the same statue soon after, in order to install it Once definitively to that place which seems always to have been his.
