Not far from Houston’s Galleria lies 155 acres of natural bliss. Five miles of trails wind through forest, meadows and wetlands containing many varieties of oaks, sycamores, towering loblolly pines, hickories, sweetgums, sassafras and magnolias.

Five miles of trails wind through forest, meadows and wetlands containing many varieties of oaks (post oak, willow oak, water oak, and southern red oak), elms, sycamores, towering loblolly pines, hickories, sweetgums, sassafras and magnolias. Trees are sporadically identified with markers throughout the arboretum.
The well-signed trails are both crushed gravel and hard-packed earth, with planks easing the journey over Houston’s eternal mud. A map of the trails is available in the Nature Center for a donation of 25 cents. In the quiet southern half of the park, away from the freeways, a boardwalk leaves the Outer Loop Trail and makes its way into the air, towards the tree canopy, ending at an observation platform overlooking Buffalo Bayou.
