The Isle of Man Government maintains an Island-wide network of Public Warning Sirens. These are maintained and managed for use in an emergency which may pose a risk to public safety.

In the event of a possible risk to public safety, identified in accordance with the Island’s Emergency Planning Manual, the sirens would be sounded with a rising and falling note for approximately 3 minutes.

When the immediate danger has passed, the sirens would be sound as a steady note for approximately 15 seconds.
The responsible authorities undertake regular quarterly tests to ensure that the network of sirens is functioning. These tests comprise the sounding of the all-clear usually on the first Saturday of the relevant month.

At the same time as the sirens are sounded in a real emergency local radio stations would interrupt their programmes to give specific details of the threat. ‘The message given to the public is GO IN, STAY IN, TUNE IN and to keep a radio on at all times, until the ‘all clear’ is sounded.
