"This cutter drum is part of the longwall mining machine called a shearer. Each

shearer has two similar drums which attach to devices called ranging arms. The ranging

arms attach to each end of the machine and articulate up and down to cut the entire ore

seam as the shearer trams back and forth over the length of the face. Shearer drums have

a series of radial bits laced on them that actually do the cutting of the ore. The drums

typically have anywhere from 40-60 on them with each one weighing approximately

6 pounds. Each drum weighs approximately 6 tons, and the shearer itself weighs over

100 tons.
