Das Rex-Lichtspieltheater wurde als Stadtteilkino Anfang der 50er Jahre gebaut. In der Nachkriegszeit boomte das Kino in Deutschland und auch das Rex sah bis in die sechziger Jahre goldene Zeiten. Mit dem Wirtschaftswunder in Deutschland konnten sich immer mehr Haushalte einen eigenen Fernseher leisten. Die Kinos blieben leer. Seit Mitte der 70er Jahre wurde im Rex kein tägliches Programm mehr gespielt. Ende der 70er Jahre wurde der Spielbetrieb ganz eingestellt. 1980 suchte der studentische Argel-Filmklub, der bis dato vor allem im Bonn-Center, dem heutigen Pantheon, ein mal in der Woche Filme gezeigt hatte, eine neue Spielstädte. Der damalige Eigentümer des Rex bestand aber auf einer täglichen Bespielung seines Kinos. Um einen täglichen Kinobetrieb gewährleisten zu können gründetet ein Teil der Filmklubmitglieder die Rex-Lichtspiel GmbH, die heute noch Betreiberin des Rex-Lichtspieltheaters ist. 1981 wurde das Rex als Programmkino wiedereröffnet. Anfang der 90er Jahre wurde das Rex neu bestuhlt. Seit 1996 verfügt das Rex über eine 6 Kanal Dolby Digital Anlage.
Für sein herausragendes Jahresfilmprogramm wird das Rex regelmäßig vom Bundesministerium für Kultur und Medien und von der Filmstiftung Nordrhein-Westfalen ausgezeichnet. Seit Mai 2002 ist das Rex in Anerkennung seiner Verdienste um den europäischen Film Mitglied im Europa Cinema Netzwerk europäischer Filmkunstkinos.

"Rex-Lichtspieltheater" was built in the early 1950s as urban district movie theater. In the postwar period, the cinema boomed in Germany, and also Rex had it's heydays in the 1960s. By the economic miracle, more and more households were able to afford an own television set. The cinemas became empty. Since the middle of the 1970s, there weren't daily screenings any more. At the end of the 1970s, the cinema was closed entirely. The academic movie club "Argel-Filmklub", having shown weekly screenings in the Bonn-Center before, was looking for a new venue in 1980. However, the owner of the Rex at that time insisted on daily screenings in his theater. So, to allow for daily business, some of the club members founded the company "Rex-Lichtspiel GmbH", which still is the operating company of the theater today. The reopening as repertory cinema took place in 1981. The seating has been renewed in the early 1990s. Since 1996, the theater is equipped with a 6 channel Dolby Digial installation.
Rex is being awarded regularly by the governmental devision "Bundesministerium für Kultur und Medien" and the foundation "Filmstiftung Nordrhein-Westfalen" for their excellent annual repertoire. Since May 2002, Rex is member of the network "Europa Cinema Netzwerk europäischer Filmkunstkinos" to honor it's afford regarding the European film.
