Brandenburg City is one of the oldest towns in eastern Germany and this crossing across river Havel has always been an essential part of town. A first bridge at this location was built in the 13th century.

On September 7, 1929, commemorating the 1000th anniversary of the city, a new bridge, called the Millennium Bridge was opened.

Throughout its troubled history, the Millennium Bridge has been demolished and rebuilt twice, which is why there are two plaques, commemorating three dates.

At the end of World War II, in April 1945, the bridge was blown up in a futile attempt to stop the advance of the Soviet army.

It was rebuilt after the war and opened again on October 4, 1947.

In 1993, the bridge was closed for road traffic because it could not handle the increased number of cars after the German reunification. It was demolished in 1995. The completely rebuilt bridge was opened on December 4, 1996. It is an authentic, though reinforced replica of the original 1929 bridge.

The original 1929 plaque got lost in the war. After the rebuild in 1947 a plaque was installed on one side of the bridge. It was put back in its original place after the 1996 reconstruction and a second plaque was added on the other side of the bridge.

The plaque on the SW side of the bridge reads:

Built at the 1000th birthday of the city in 1929
Destroyed by Hitler's Madness on April 29, 1945
Resurrected in peaceful labor on October 4, 1947.

The plaque on the NE side simply reads Millennium Bridge, reconstructed in 1996

Sources for all information were the memories of 20 years of living in Brandenburg and an article on German Wikipedia.
