The Sandman was originally a mythical character in Northern European folklore, made popular by a fairy tale written by Hans Christian Andersen in 1841. The Sandman puts children to sleep and gives them pleasant dream by sprinkling magical "dream sand" into their eyes.

In 1959, an East-German TV station picked up on the popular theme and created a daily short good-night-show for children.

The show soon became very popular, was aired in Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark and was hailed as one of the few East-German TV shows popular in West-Germany. A Norwegian documentary once called the East-German Sandman "a socialist superman."

Sandman's Vehicle Fleet

Today, Sandman's Good-Night-Show is the longest running TV show in German Television, looking back at over 50 years. The show, a stop motion animation, is produced in the Babelsberg Film Studios in Potsdam and when the Potsdam Film Museum opened in 1981, the studio put all vehicles used in the production on display in a permanent exhibition. By now, Sandman's fleet has grown to 240 vehicles from boats and cars over trucks and airplanes to space ships.

Below: The exhibition includes a brief history of the show, from the beginnings in 1959 to the the time, when a Sandman Puppet actually flew in space during a joint Soviet-East German spaceflight in 1978.
