[EN] The Schoelcher Library is the departmental public library of the city of Fort-de-France in Martinique, named after the French politician Victor Schoelcher (1804-1893). It is located at the corner of the rue de la Liberté and rue Victor Sévère, facing the north corner of the Place de la Savane.
The building consists of a volume on a square plan of 17.75 m of side and a rectangular porch.
The pyramidal curve of its metal frame and its large glass dome serve as a setting for the reading room.
The metallic skeleton of the building recalls that of the Saint-Louis Cathedral designed by the same architect.
The style of the building combines Byzantine influences, art nouveau, Egyptian art and Western classic with a frieze decorated with the names of great French writers and a very colorful mosaic exterior pediment.
Most of the original books originating from Schoelcher 's personal library (10,000 volumes and 250 musical scores) are sent from metropolitan France to Martinique as early as 1884.
Around 1,200 livres of Schoelcher's gift escaped the flames during the great fire of Fort-de-France in 1890, among which was a copy of Quatreving-thirteen signed by Victor Hugo.
Among the treasures of the Library, there is also a Black Code and a navigation treatise in Latin in the seventeenth century.
[FR] La Bibliothèque Schœlcher est la bibliothèque publique départementale de la ville de Fort-de-France en Martinique, nommée d'après l'homme politique français Victor Schœlcher (1804-1893). Elle se situe à l'angle de la rue de la Liberté et de la rue Victor Sévère, face à l'angle nord de la place de la Savane.
Le bâtiment se compose d'un volume sur plan carré de 17,75 m de côté et d'un porche rectangulaire.
La courbe pyramidale de sa charpente métallique et de sa grande coupole de verre servent d'écrin à la salle de lecture.
Le squelette métallique du bâtiment rappelle celui de la Cathédrale Saint-Louis conçue par le même architecte.
Le style du bâtiment mêle influences byzantine, art nouveau, art égyptien et le classique occidentale avec un décor de frises portant les noms de grands écrivains français et un fronton extérieur de mosaïque très coloré.
La plupart des livres originaux en provenance de la bibliothèque personnelle de Schœlcher (10 000 volumes et 250 partitions musicales) sont envoyés de métropole en Martinique dès 1884.
Environ 1 200 livres du don de Schœlcher échappent aux flammes lors du grand incendie de Fort-de-France en 1890, parmi lesquels un exemplaire de Quatrevingt-treize dédicacé par Victor Hugo.
Parmi les trésors de la Bibliothèque, on compte aussi un Code noir et un traité de navigation en latin du XVIIe siècle.
