The plaque reads:

"Monumento a los martires / Erigido en homenaje al capitan de la Vanguardia de los expedicionarios del Granma Jose Smith Comas / Inaugurado el 8 de Dic de 1978 en el 22 aniversario de su caida. / Remozado y reinaugurado el 8 de Dic de 1997 en homenaje a todos los caidos del MCPIO por la defensa a partir de la guerra de liberation iniciada por Fidel y sus companeros con el asalto al cuartel Moncada el 26 de Julio de 1953."

Translation:

"Monument to the martyrs / Erected in homage to the captain of the vanguard of the Granma expeditionary, Jose Smith Comas. / Inaugurated on December 8, 1978 on the 22nd anniversary of his fall. / Restored and reinaugurated on December 8, 1997 in homage to all the fallen of the municipality during the war of liberation initiated by Fidel and his companions with the assault of the Moncada barracks on July 26, 1953."

Joseph Smith Comas was a young revolutionary patriot with great talents as speaker. He joined the Orthodox Youth in 1954 and was the founder of the 26th of July Movement. He left for Mexico in December 1955 to join the Granma Yacht expedition. He was shot on December 8, 1956 in Boca del Rio Toro, Cuba.

Chronology of the Cuban Revolution:

1868–1878: Ten Years' War, also known as the Great War (Guerra Grande) and the War of '68, was part of Cuba's fight for independence from Spain, led by Cuban-born planters (especially by Carlos Manuel de Céspedes) and other wealthy natives.

1879: Little War or Small War, second of three conflicts between Cuban rebels and Spain. It started on 26 August 1879 and ended in rebel defeat in September 1880.

1895-1898: Cuban War of Independence, the last of three liberation wars that Cuba fought against Spain, being initiated by Jose Marti.

1933: The popular revolution against Cuban dictator Gerardo Machado.

1956–1959: The Cuban Revolution led by Fidel Castro removes the government of General Fulgencio Batista. By 1962 Cuba had been transformed into a declared socialist republic.
