Work started on the Episcopal church of St.John in 1879 in the town`s East High Street, replacing a former church built in 1823 that stood slightly to the north.

The church occupies the corner site with the junction of Green Street. The squat tower in the south-west corner was to have been crowned with a 150 foot spire, but was abandoned due to a lack of funds

The church is a rectangular shape with a large nave running north-south. There is a west side aisle and a chancel at the north end. A hall, built in 1887 is attached to the northern side.

The main south side facing the High Street is of coursed, square rusticated red sandstone. The entrance doorway, mouldings, surrounds and dressings are of yellow ashlar sandstone. The roofs are slated.

The main entrance at the foot of the tower is a pointed arch doorway, with above, an A-framed carved image of the Virgin Mary, a rounded window is situated above and on the rounded east end there are six narrow slit windows. The main south gable has three narrow pointed arch windows, the only non stained glass windows in the church. A narrow gabled buttress rounds off the south-east corner

On the eastern side facing the downhill Green Street are five pointed windows. The gable of the chancel to the north has a massive stained glass pointed arch window. The west wall has five pointed arch windows, with the west face of the tower a small pointed arch window and a round window similar to the one on the south side.

The interior was altered in 1974, when the side aisle was partitioned off to create a larger lady chancel and other amenities. To the rear of the church off Queen Street is a burial ground dating back to 1833
