The statue of Carlos Manuel de Céspedes is located in Parque Céspedes in the center of Plaza de Armas, Old Havana. It commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Republic of Cuba.

The marble statue was sculpted in 1953 by Cuban artist Sergio López Mesa and was erected in 1955 when Miguel Tacón commissioned a remodeling of the Plaza that shaped the square we see today.

The inscription on the base reads: "A Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, Padre de la Patria y primer Presidente de la republica. El pueblo de cuba en el Cincuentenario de la independencia."

Translation: "To Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, Father of the Country and first President of the republic. The people of Cuba on the 50th anniversary of independence."

Carlos Manuel de Céspedes del Castillo (April 18, 1819, Bayamo, Spanish Cuba – February 27, 1874, San Lorenzo, Spanish Cuba) was a Cuban planter who freed his slaves and made the declaration of Cuban independence in 1868 which started the Ten Years' War. The revolutionary struggle began on October 10, 1868 and although it did not attain its objective of independence and abolition of slavery, it decisively influenced the history of Cuba.
