CMT opened in 1986 as a non-profit organization in the heart of downtown Tacoma. The museum remained in its original location for 10 years; rotating single theme exhibits roughly every 18 months.
Due to the excellence in education, programming and hands-on exhibits, the Museum earned a reputation as a cultural cornerstone. As a result, the Museum's physical location and size could no longer accommodate the community's demand for its services. The Museum's Board of Directors voted to relocate to the Theater District, inhabiting the historic Kress Building.
In February 1997, the Museum opened the "new" Children's Museum of Tacoma. Since that time, the Museum has featured both single and multiple-theme exhibits and a new array of complementary programming.
