A statue of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V depicts the Emperor dressed in warm weather Roman military attire. He is wearing a skirt with A cingulum militare around his waist. His upper chest is covered with a cloak fastened with a broach below the left shoulder. A sheathed sword hangs from straps on his left side. His right arm is outstretched at waist level and his hand is open palm down. His left arm is holding a baton that reaches his feet which are wearing sandals. On his head he is wearing a wreath of laurel leaves.

Four step lead up to an ornate marble base with a double headed eagle with outspread wings at the top. It is inscribed in Latin on four sides. Fortunately, the complete Latin inscription is contained in the following website: Web link

The future Charles V was born into the House of Habsburg on February 24, 1500 in Ghent, Flanders, in the Habsburg controlled Netherlands. He was the son of the Philip I of Castile and Joanna I of Castile. He inherited a vast domain that made him Emperor over of half Europe and the part of the Americas that was recently discovered and conquered.

His main rival was Francis I, the King of Francis I, whom he defeated and captured on February 25, 1525 Carlo at the Battle of Pavia. In 1530 he was crowned emperor of the Holy Roman Empire by the Pope. He was the Holy Roman Emperor from June 28, 1519 until he abdicated as Holy Roman Emperor in favor of his brother Ferdinand on August 27, 1556. During his tenure he was confronted with the Protestant Reformation that was spreading through northern Europe.
