Kirk Maughold was founded around 450 A.D. by Saint Maughold, who was expelled from Ireland by Saint Patrick and later became Bishop of Sodor and Man.

The parish church started life as a monastic keeill (chapel) and contains traces of later 12th century construction, possibly commissioned by the Viking King Olaf 1 (1114-1154).

There are three extant keeills in the large monastic enclosure (now the graveyard), together with a large collection of Celtic and Viking crosses.

The parish of Maughold produced the largest collection of crosses and slabs during the early Christian period (6th-13th century) on the Island and most of these were found in the churchyard.

The Churchyard also contains a large number of gravestones, some of great age. There are also a number of large family tombs whilst a small number of gravestones are quite modern in stark contrast to the majority of the stones found in the Churchyard.
