[EN] Built between 1105 and 1165, the abbey church crosses the styles angevins and poitevins. It is impressive in its sobriety and dimensions.
Its choir, slender and refined, marks the apogee of Romanesque art. The lower nave has a hundred sculpted capitals.
It is in this unique setting that the four recumbents of the Plantagenet dynasty are laid out: Henry II, King of England, his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine, who was formerly Queen of France, their son Richard Lionheart and Isabelle Of Angoulême, wife of their son Cadet, Jean Sans Terre.
A vast quadrangular space consisting of four long galleries, the cloister was a place of wandering for the nuns, rhythmizing their eight daily services. To the east of this space is the chapter house, with its walls decorated with paintings realized in the 16th century, depicting the scenes of the Passion of Christ.
The cuisines are the quirkiness of the Royal Abbey, with their Byzantine style. The building differs from the others in its typically Poitevin facing, made of Charente stones. The octagonal shape of this building and its roof bristling with numerous chimneys in "fish scales" have been a subject of reflection for historians.

Son chœur, élancé et épuré, marque l’apogée de l’art roman. La nef, située plus bas, compte une centaine de chapiteaux sculptés.
C’est dans ce décor unique que les quatre gisants de la dynastie Plantagenêt sont disposés : Henri II, roi d’Angleterre, son épouse Aliénor d’Aquitaine, qui fût antérieurement reine de France, leur fils Richard Cœur de Lion ainsi qu’Isabelle d’Angoulême, épouse de leur fils Cadet, Jean Sans Terre.
Vaste espace quadrangulaire constitué de quatre longues galeries, le cloître était un lieu de déambulation pour les religieuses, rythmant leurs huit offices quotidiens. À l’est de cet espace se trouve la salle capitulaire, avec ses murs ornés de peintures réalisées au 16ème siècle, représentant les scènes de la Passion du Christ.
Les cuisines constituent la bizarrerie de l’Abbaye Royale, avec leur style byzantin. Le bâtiment diffère des autres par son parement typiquement poitevin, fait de pierres de Charente. La forme octogonale de ce bâtiment et sa toiture hérissée de nombreuses cheminées en « écailles de poisson » ont été un sujet de réflexion pour les historiens.
