Sur ce site, nous sommes en présence d'un puits artésien obtenu après forage.
Le débit de sortie est assez impressionnant.
Cette source, qui atteint les 28°c, jaillit des profondeurs de la nappe phréatique avec un débit de 90m3 /h. Creusé artificiellement dans les années 1930 en vue de découvrir du pétrole, ce puits permet la sortie d’une eau de 15 000 ans d’âge ! En effet, c’est le temps nécessaire pour lui permettre de parcourir 300 km, distance entre son puits naturel d’entrée, situé en Champagne (près de Troyes), et son puits de sortie à Incarville.
L'histoire rapporte que c'est parce qu'un abbé se mit en tête de trouver du pétrole que l'on trouva de l'eau chaude. A l'emplacement indiqué par l'abbé, un derrick en bois d'une vingtaine de mètres fut installé, et le 10 mars 1931, on commença le forage.
Arrivé à 300 mètres de profondeur, un geyser d'eau jaillit. Point de pétrole, mais l'abbé persuadé que du pétrole se trouvait en ce lieu décida que le forage se devait d'aller plus profond. La conquête du pétrole s'arrêta là, le forage ayant conduit à la mise en place d'un puits artésien, c'est à dire que les travaux de forage avaient atteint la nappe phréatique formée par l’infiltration des eaux coincées entre deux couches imperméables.
Cette eau réchauffée par contact géothermique provient des zones limites du bassin parisien et jaillit avec le principe des vases communiquants. Par sa réputation et sa composition en ammoniaque et en gaz carbonique, elle est connue pour avoir des propriétés dermatologiques.
Un canal a été creusé pour que l'eau puisse s’évacuer vers l’Eure qui s'écoule à proximité.
