The jail was built in the northern part of the town in 1841-42. It was doubled in size in 1851 and continued to serve as a prison until the 1920s when it was turned into local government offices, although the County Police Headquarters remained here until moving to new premises in 1969
The most notorious happening occurred in 1848 when James Robertson of Findowrie was convicted of murdering his child and was executed at the east gate of the prison. He was buried close to the spot which today is somewhere near the wall that defines the eastern part of the site.
Today, the building`s front elevation still remains just as it was built, although it has been extended to the west and north during the 20th century.
