[E] Place Plumereau is the center of the Saint-Martin district, one of the historic districts of Old Tours.
It was enlarged in 1895, which required the destruction of several houses.
It is successively baptized carroi aux Chapeaux (13th century), place Saint-Pierre-le-Puellier, place aux Fruits (1816), carroi Saint-Pierre, carroi des Quenouilles and from 18 November 1888 it takes the name of place Plumereau, in honor of Charles Plumereau (1818-1885), city councilor of Tours who bequeathed to the city 3,000 francs.
The half-timbered houses in decrepitude after the war were on the verge of being demolished at the end of the 50s. They were preserved only thanks to the action of the Mayor Jean Royer and the work of the architect Pierre Boille.
The square and all the streets around, pedestrian since 1985, today shelter many bars and restaurants that welcome Tourangeaux and tourists.
The place which constitutes a site classified since 1935, includes several half-timbered houses inscribed to historical monuments and dating from the 15th century
It is more commonly called "la Plum" by the Tourangeaux and the international travel site Lonely Planet ranked Place Plumereau in Tours, as the most beautiful place in France to take a drink!
