Das Gebäude bildet den Mittelpunkt des Werkes, in dem täglich mehr als 850 Autos produziert werden. Als „Kommunikations- und Nervenzentrum“ verbindet der Zentralbau die einzelnen Werkabschnitte miteinander. Die Architektur sieht vor, dass sämtliche Bereiche offen gestaltet sind. So haben die Büroflächen nur wenige Wände und die Autos gleiten zwischen ihren Produktionsschritten über den Köpfen der Mitarbeiter_innen und Besucher_innen hinweg.
Das Konzept und die besondere Architektur des Zentralgebäudes wurden mehrfach ausgezeichnet, unter anderem mit dem Deutschen Architekturpreis 2005.
The building forms the center of the factory, in which more than 850 cars are produced every day. As a “communication and nerve center”, the central building connects the individual plant sections. The architecture provides that all areas are open. The office space has only a few walls, and the cars glide over the heads of the visitors and employees between their production steps.
The concept and the special architecture of the central building have received several awards including the German Architecture Prize 2005.
