The Fountain du Roi René in honor of René of Anjou, is located at the eastern end of the cours Mirabeau, on the site of an ancient fountain in the shape of a pyramid and destroyed during the Revolution.

The fountain du Roi René is the work of David d'Angers (1819), based on a drawing by Pierre Revoil : a stone statue depicting King René, who died in Aix-en-Provence on 10 July 1480, holding a scepter in the right hand and a bunch of Muscat grapes in the left, all enthroned on a fountain. At his feet are placed various objects, like books and a painter's palette recalling the inclination of the king for the arts. On the sides of the pedestal one finds medallions representing the advisers of the King, artisans of the union of Provence with France. The monument, with a total weight of 6.6 tons, was realized in Paris in 1822. The journey to Aix, in a tank equipped with a platform, lasted a month. The fountain was inaugurated on 19 May 1823 in the presence of Marie-Thérèse of France, Duchess of Angoulême. The monument including the statue of marble and the basin encircling the pedestal, is restored at the end of 2009 to mark the 600th birthday of Roi René.
René of Anjou (1409–1480), also known as René I of Naples and Good King René, was count of Piedmont, Duke of Bar (1430–80), Duke of Lorraine (1431–53), Duke of Anjou, Count of Provence (1434–80), King of Naples (1435–42; titular 1442–80), titular King of Jerusalem (1438–80) and Aragon including Sicily, Majorca and Corsica (1466–80).

La fontaine Roi René est l'œuvre de David d'Angers (1819), sur un dessin de Pierre Revoil : une statue en pierre représentant le roi René, mort à Aix-en-Provence le 10 juillet 1480, tenant un sceptre dans la main droite et une grappe de raisin muscat dans la gauche, le tout trônant sur une fontaine. À ses pieds sont disposés divers objets, comme des livres et une palette de peintre rappelant le penchant du roi pour les arts. Sur les côtés du piédestal on trouve des médaillons représentant les conseillers du Roi, artisans de l'union de la Provence à la France. L'ensemble, d'un poids total de 6,6 tonnes, a été réalisé en 1822 à Paris. Le trajet jusqu'à Aix, à bord d'un char muni d'une plate-forme, a duré un mois. La fontaine a été inaugurée le 19 mai 1823 en présence de Marie-Thérèse de France, duchesse d'Angoulême. Le monument incluant la statue de marbre et le bassin encerclant le piédestal, est restauré à la fin de l'année 2009 pour souligner le 600e anniversaire du Roi René.
René d'Anjou, ou René Ier d'Anjou, ou encore René Ier de Naples ou René de Sicile, surnommé par ses sujets le « Bon Roi René », né le 16 janvier 1409 à Angers, et mort le 10 juillet 1480 à Aix-en-Provence), fut seigneur puis comte de Guise (1417-1425), duc de Bar (1430-1480) de fait dès 1420, duc consort de Lorraine (1431-1453), duc d'Anjou (1434-1480), comte de Provence et de Forcalquier (1434-1480), comte de Piémont, comte de Barcelone, roi de Naples (1435-1442), roi titulaire de Jérusalem (1435-1480), roi titulaire de Sicile (1434-1480) et d'Aragon (1466-1480), marquis de Pont-à-Mousson (-1480), ainsi que pair de France et fondateur de l'Ordre du Croissant.
