The most popular place for visits in Porvoo is by far Old Porvoo and the beautiful Cathedral therein (the third most popular church in Finland as measured in number of visitors!).

Unfortunately, in the night of 29 th May 2006 the cathedral was ravaged by fire which was lit on purpose. Because of the fire, all ceremonies in the cathedral have been cancelled. The fire did not cause much damage to the interior of the church because the ceiling did not collapse. However, the church was damaged by smoke and water. Some windows were broken and chandeliers fell down. Repair works have started.
The oldest part of the cathedral dates back to the late 13th or early 14th century. The present form dates back to the 15th century when the church was rebuilt. The church has undergone hard times. In 1508 the Danes destroyed the church, in 1571 and 1590 the church was burnt when the Russians attacked. In the 17th century the church was renovated again but in 1708, during the Great Nothern War, it was burnt once more. Porvoo church became a cathedral in 1723 when the bishopric was moved from Vyborg to Porvoo. Porvoo was bombed several times during the Winter War and the Continuation War and on 10th August 1941 a bomb hit also the cathedral. A parish church guide is on duty at the catheral gate during the summer on weekdays from 14:00 to 18:00 and on Saturdays from 10:00 to 14:00. The guidning takes place outside the church walls in Finnish, Swedish and English.
