The monument has the shape of a 6.50 meter high submarine kiosk rising in front of the sea. At the front of the kiosk, the bronze statue of a widow and her child holding a bachi (French navy sailor hat) symbolizes the pain of the families . This monumental work is the work of Mr. Olivier Détroyat, urban architect and Mr. Gérard Vié, official sculptor of the armies.

The monument comprises fifteen bronze plaques, twelve of which are dedicated to the names of the submariners. 1600 names are listed. They are all sailors who died during accidents or war operations. The first drama goes back to the accidental loss of the Farfadet, in 1905, off Tunisia. The last accident was the nuclear submarine attack Emerald, in 1994. Ten crew members had been killed after an explosion and a release of steam.
