[FR] Six puits artésiens à travers la ville
Au début du XVIe siècle, de nombreux puits étaient utilisés mais à leurs eaux stagnantes, on préférait les sources. C'est ainsi qu'on choisit en 1506 la source du Limançon, à Saint-Avertin, pour alimenter la ville?: réservoirs souterrains, aqueduc, franchissement du Cher en siphon… Plus de 4 km à parcourir. En 1681, on construira une machine mue par deux chevaux pour élever le point de départ de l'eau.
Puis, on décide de construire six fontaines publiques à Tours (dont celle de Beaune) dans différents endroits de la ville?: place Foire-le-Roi, place du Grand-Marché, face à la tour Charlemagne… La dernière fontaine publique sera installée (au niveau du 80, rue Nationale) par l'intendant Cluzel lors de la création de la rue.
En 1829, suite au tarissement de la source et « pour concéder de l'eau aux propriétaires qui voudraient jouir de cet avantage », on décide de creuser six puits artésiens à travers la ville?: celui de la place Saint-Gatien trouvera l'eau à 124 m. On stockera alors de l'eau dans la tour Charlemagne pour alimenter le réseau des fontaines de quartier. Dix ans plus tard, le procédé artésien sera abandonné au profit d'une usine pouvant pomper dans le Cher 6.000 mètres cubes par jour (le Limançon ne fournissait plus alors que 20 m3/jour), puis 17.900 m3. En 1878, on creuse quatre réservoirs dans la Tranchée, qui peuvent stocker 30.000 m3, l'eau étant refoulée depuis Rochepinard, à 40 mètres au-dessus du niveau de la ville.
La mauvaise qualité biologique de cette eau fait abandonner le procédé en 1914 au profit de puits descendant sous le lit de la Loire dans l'île Aucard. En 1970, on fore de nouveaux puits dans l'île aux Vaches, face à Marmoutier.
En 1992, un forage de secours, en cas de pollution, sera effectué dans la nappe du cénomanien, plus profond.
