The trails are many here, and some look to be old enough to have been natural trails made by game and native inhabitants, rather than park design.

The area along the coast was once the province of the Waccamaw and Winyah peoples. They lived primarily along the Waccamaw River in Georgetown and Horry counties, especially near the area now known as Dog Bluff. The Waccamaw were river dwellers who fished and hunted along the Waccamaw River from North Carolina’s Lake Waccamaw to Winyah Bay near Georgetown, South Carolina. Unlike many of the othere groups who ceased to exist because of smallpox epidemics and other contact hazards, the Waccamaw tribes are all still present in South Carolina.

There is a small freshwater stream nearby, and tha tmay have been the attraction being featured by the tree. It may also have served as a simple marker to lead the way to a more interior location from the nearby beach.
