EN: The stone eagle on the Simplon pass is not to be overlooked. About twelve meters high, it stands above the road and looks with a vigilant gaze towards the south to the Italian border.
The today's landmark of the Simplon Pass was created in the Second World War by members of the Mountain Brigade 11 in their leisure time to commemorate the sentry service on the pass. The eagle, the symbol of the brigade, was designed by the architect and sculptor Erwin Friedrich Baumann. The granite blocks came from the excavations of an enlargement of the artillery fort in the Gondo Gorge. Thanks to a sophisticated inside ventilation system, the harmful effects of the alpine climate are minimized.
The eagle was inaugurated on September 10, 1944. On the pedestal stands: "Mountain Brigade 11, 1939-1945" and "In the freedom of the mountains it stands, a massive monument of hard granite: a commemoration of faithful fulfillment of duty, a lasting reminder to be willing and awake for our freedom."
DE: Der steinerne Adler auf der Simplon-Passhöhe ist nicht zu übersehen. Etwa zwölf Meter hoch steht er über der Strasse und blickt wachsam nach Süden zur italienischen Grenze.
Das heutige Wahrzeichen des Simplonpasses wurde im Zweiten Weltkrieg zur Erinnerung an den Wachdienst auf der Passhöhe von Angehörigen der Grenzbrigade 11 in ihrer Freizeit erstellt. Der Adler, das Symbol der Brigade, wurde vom Architekten und Bildhauer Erwin Friedrich Baumann gestaltet. Die Granitblöcke stammten aus dem Aushub der Vergrösserung der Artillerieforts in der Gondoschlucht. Durch ein ausgeklügeltes Belüftungssystem im Innern werden die schädlichen Auswirkungen des alpinen Klimas minimiert.
Der Adler wurde am 10. September 1944 eingeweiht. Auf seinem Sockel steht: «Gebirgsbrigade 11, 1939-1945» und «In der Freiheit der Berge steht es, ein wuchtiges Mal aus hartem Granit: ein Gedenken treuer Pflichterfüllung, ein dauerndes Mahnen, willig und wach zu sein für unsere Freiheit.»
