The Winter Hill air disaster occurred on 27 February 1958 when the Silver City Airways Bristol 170 (G-AICS), travelling from the Isle of Man to Manchester, England, crashed near the summit of Winter Hill (also known as Rivington Moor) several hundred yards away from the Independent Television Authority's Winter Hill transmitting station.
The flight was essentially a charter flight from Ronaldsway Airport in the Isle of Man to Manchester Ringway Airport for a group of mainly Motor Traders to visit the Manchester car show. Thirty-five people died and seven were injured.
On the 40th Anniversary of Winter Hill air disaster, a small memorial was unveiled in front of the terminal of Ronaldsway Airport. The monument consists of two plaques and a small flowerbed. One plaque lists the names of the 35 victims, on the other is the following text:
On the 40th Anniversary of
the tragic loss on Winter Hill, Lancashire
of 35 Island residents
who departed from this Airport.
This plaque was unveiled in their memory
on this
27th day of February 1998
