The cemetery of the homeless in Westerland on Sylt, also called "homestead for homeless people", was created 1854 by the beach bailiff Wulf Hansen Decker. Up to this point, unknown bodies, washed to the beach, were simply left to themselves. Most of them were overboard and drowned sailors. A chronicler counted 418 dead on Sylt's beaches for the period from 1600 to 1870.
