Mount Tyrwhitt / Grizzly Col

This natural arch, visible from Highway 40, is located on the east ridge of Mount Tyrwhitt. While Mount Tyrwhitt is a level 2 scramble, well beyond the capability (or comfort) of many of us, a fairly easy hike to Pocaterra Cirque / Grizzly Col will provide a very nice view of this arch. The waymark coordinates are for the easy viewing area, NOT the actual physical location of the arch.

To get up close and personal with the arch, you will need to scramble up the east ridge of Mount Tyrwhitt. While we are experienced hikers, and Papa GeoK did try to make the ascent, this level 2 scramble is beyond our capabilities at the moment. A quick search on the internet suggest that John Kane's "Scrambles in the Canadian Rockies" would be a good place to start if you're considering an ascent of Mount Tyrwhitt.
You can still get a great view of the arch from Pocaterra Cirque or from Grizzly Col trail, which is where we took our photo of the arch. Park at the Highwood Pass parking lot and take the unmaintained trail to Grizzly Col. This hike is described in "Where Locals Hike in the Canadian Rockies" by Kathy & Craig Copeland.

Type of Material:
Limestone, very common in this mountainous region, does not often lead to the formation of arches, so they are not widely found in the Canadian Rockies. This one is fairly accessible.
