The city campus is one of three campuses for Erie Community College. When first built in 1901, the building was home to the main post office for the City of Buffalo. As the population of the city declined, the need for such a large post office was not needed and it was turned into a branch post office, then later closed. Demolition threatened the building in the late '70s before being saved by the Erie County legislator. ECC moved in in 1981.
The downtown campus is home to the several majors including criminal justice, culinary arts, office management, office technology, and paralegal. The Burt Flickinger Athletic Center across Elm Street, built for the World University Games in 1993, houses an Olympic-size swimming pool with a movable floor, a 25-meter warm-up pool, three regulation basketball courts, a field house which seats 3,000, an indoor jogging track, wellness center, men’s and women’s locker room and shower facilities, and athletic department offices and classrooms.
