This building is home to the local branch of the Red Cross. Across Canada, there are more than 300 local sections. The national office is also located in Ottawa at 170 Metcalfe.

The Canadian Red Cross Society dates back to 1896. Much of the society's work deals with disaster management and safety training (first aid and CPR training, swimming training etc). Until late 1998, the Red Cross also managed the country's blood supply. However, a tainted-blood scandal in the late 1980s resulted in thousands of Canadians becoming infected through donated blood. Canadian Blood Services now manages the donor blood inventory.
