Créé le 1er janvier 1964 à partir de la 11e demi-brigade parachutiste de choc, le Centre national d'entraînement commando, dit aussi CNEC, est un centre unique et spécialiste de la formation commando en France.
Avec le retour en 1961 des troupes françaises d'Algérie, les méthodes d'instruction des troupes de choc sont reconnues pour leur efficacité en matière d'aguerrissement.
Created on 1 January 1964 from the 11th demi-brigade parachutist of shock, the National Centre for commando training, also said CNEC is a unique center and training specialist commando in France.
With the return in 1961 of French troops from Algeria, methods of instruction shock troops are known for their effectiveness in hardening.
Sur son promontoire, la Citadelle est l'élément de défense de la place forte de Mont-Louis.
Dès sa création en 1679 elle a vocation militaire, elle compte alors 2500 soldats.
Depuis 1964 elle abrite le CNEC Centre National d'Entraînement Commando.
Désormais l'accès y est réglementé : on n'y pénètre qu'accompagné par des guides lors de visites exclusives organisées par l'office de tourisme.
