When the Austro-Hungarian Empire took over Bosnia in 1878, the new authorities initiated a building spree in Sarajevo. Amongst the projects was the building of a new City Hall, which should be the largest structure ever seen in the city.

However, on the spot where the new building should be, there was the house of a very stubborn man who, after long negotiations, agreed in moving out under two conditions: first, he would be paid a huge amount in golden coins; second, his house should be relocated to the opposite bank of the river.

For political reasons the authorities wanted to avoid the use of brute force so the terms were agreed. It was in 1895.

Nowadays the house is a traditional restaurant.
