Alto Adige's most popular excursion destination in Meran covers more than 80 garden landscapes (natural and cultural landscapes) with plants from all over the world. The gardens are divided into four themes: the forest gardens show miniature forests from America and Asia, the solar gardens enchant with landscapes of the mediterranean space, the water and terraced gardens present designed garden areas with stairs and watercourses; The landscapes of South Tyrol offer a glimpse into the original native plant world.
The strength of the gardens of Schloss Trauttmansdorff lies in the unique combination of art and nature - for example by ten artist pavilions - as well as the inclusion of thematically related fauna and the juxtaposition of historical and contemporary architecture; There are a variety of experience stations, event series specially designed for the gardens and the highlight of the seasons. Then there is the castle with the first tourism museum of the Alps, the Touriseum, in the former residence of Empress Elisabeth. And finally, thanks to their location in a terraced amphitheater, the gardens have a difference in height of more than 100 m with magnificent views of Meran and the South Tyrolean mountains.
The gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle are an experience for all senses - for young and old alike - they are a place of rest and relaxation for laymen as well as professionals. For this successful combination of nature and art as well as for its innovative spirit, the facility was voted 2005 as the most beautiful garden in Italy; Only a year later she earned the award as Europe's Garden No. 6! The culmination of efforts to connect and market gardens and tourism for the economic impetus of a region was recently awarded the "International Garden of the Year 2013" award at the International Garden Tourism Conference in Toronto, Canada.
A garden for all
This introduction to "Trauttmansdorff" tells the success story of our botanical garden and its staging as a leisure activity for a broad target group; Due to its location in South Tyrol / Italy, the bridge function of the garden between the German and Italian speaking areas is multi-lingual and communicated. The respect for the plant world - an ecological and sustainable plant care is the focus - finds its correspondence in the peaceful coexistence of gardeners, who enjoy and experience the gardens as a harmonious, that is, conflict-free meeting place for many cultures.
At the center of all efforts are the Trauttmansdorff guests: Good service is given from the reception in the visitor center over the meticulous maintenance of the children's and wheelchair-friendly paths to the offer of regional specialties in the restaurant and Palmencafé.
According to the leitmotif "Gardens in Motion" the appearance of the gardens changes week by week, and new garden areas and unique attractions are added annually. Through special exhibitions as well as musical and culinary events - including the cozy summer nights with world music at its finest, the cozy breakfast at Sissi, Trauttmansdorff after the end of the evening with exotic garden cocktails - as well as theme-specific garden tours, Botany is always conveyed as a multi-dimensional sense experience.
Embedded in local, national and international cooperations, new partnerships with partners are being pursued in the mediation of the gardens and an extraordinary South Tyrol experience; The gardens are such a reflection of South Tyrol's diversity and hospitality.
