The story (as it was told to me) is this: Back in the early 1800s, the local constable, who traveled the area, used this as his jail. "LEO 1817" is easily seen on the outside, leading one to believe that possibly someone named Leo carved this in 1817. There is a settlement (far north) of here known as LEO. Of curious note, L.E.O. stands for Law Enforcement Organization, nowadays.

I've not been able to find out much more about this, other than that.

The ceiling is just over 6 feet high, and the room measures around 12 feet by 12 feet. Chisel marks are still easily seen, as well as graffiti.

The land that the boulder sits upon is privately-owned land, and there is a home just up the hill to the right of the jail. The doorway lies only a couple feet off the highway.
