The camp was opened in 1943 an American military Hospital, following the Normandy landing, after the war amongst other things became temporary home to Uganda refugees fleeing Idi Amin in 1972. It was closed in 1976.
The camp was demolished and there are no traces of the hospital site remains

Plasterdown Camp was used as a field hospital. I remember as a young lad seeing row upon row of huts, which still remained after the war.Some Today all that is remaining of the site is the road running across the area and stream/ leat.
Originally the camp was called "Plaister Down" but over time changed to Plaster Down perhaps named after the Hospital and all the plasters used within. A little dark comedy from the returning injured troops.
