James Nestigen passed away while living in Minneapolis. He was a well recognized designer and landscaper who was credited with such work as the Minneapolis Convention Center. He served on many local boards to include the Minneapolis Planning Commission. In May of 2006 he lost his battle with amyloidosis and died from complications of the rare disease. He had memorial services in Minneapolis and his interment was held in Coon Valley where he served as the Director of the Norskedalen Nature and Heritage Center from 1990 to 1994. This tree sits opposite of Gundersen Pond across the walking path. It's plaque simply states "In Memory of James Nestigen".
