Hans Otto Theater Potsdam

Gottfried Böhm

In 2006 a new theater building opend in the capital of the German state of Brandenburg. It was designed by award winning architect Gottfried Böhm. Between 1947 and 2006, Mr. Böhm designed countless buildings on three continents. He received more than a dozen architectural prices and holds honorable degrees at universities in Germany, France, Great Britain, the USA and Peru.

In 1986, he was the first German Architect to receive the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize.

For Potsdam, he designed a modern looking, five story theater building. The design looks a little bit out of place, but it fits 250 years of architectural history in Potsdam.

Ever since the time of King Frederick the Great, Potsdam has tried to recreate great pieces of the World's architecture. So, in addition to French, Italian and Scottish style castles, Brandenburg's capital has a Russian Church, a Roman style pleasure garden and even an old Egyptian Obelisk.

So it was only fitting to add a building with a certain resemblance of the Sydney Opera.
