This statue shows busts of Soviet cosmonaut Valery Bykovsky and East German Cosmonaut Sigmund Jähn.

The busts are placed on a granite pedestal bearing the inscription Gemeinsam auf der Erde und im All (Together on Earth and in Space).

Launched on August 26, 1978, the two cosmonauts performed the first joint Russian-German space flight, the Intercosmos mission of Soviet space craft Soyuz 31, docking with the Salyut 6 space station for one week.

They returned to Earth on September 3, 1978 with space craft Soyuz 29.

The statue is placed near the Helmert-Tower in Potsdam's Science Park.

The Soyuz 31 mission was mainly a geodesic survey mission, using the East-German built Multispectral Camera MKF-6.

The Helmert-Tower, belonging to the German Research Centre for Geosciences is a significant geodesic landmark.
