EN: The "plate of the dead" of Naters is located on a side street in the east of the old village attached to a residential building. It is a limestone slab from 1.8 to 0.9 meters on a stone foundation. On the side, the plate is dated 1685.

But what is a plate of the dead? Perhaps this is the only one that exists at all. At least, I have not found any evidence for another one, anywhere. Apparently it was used for the preparation of burials. Until the beginning of the 20th century, the inhabitants of the outlying hamlets and farms around Naters, who lived in impassable steep areas not yet accessible by roads, had to bring their dead to the village without a coffin. Only here on the dead plate, the dead were prepared, placed in the coffin and then taken to the cemetery at the nearby church.

DE: Die Totenplatte von Naters befindet sich an einer Seitenstrasse im Osten des alten Dorfkerns an der Wand eines Wohnhauses. Es ist eine Kalksteinplatte von 1.8 auf 0.9 Meter auf einem Steinfundament. An der Seite ist die Platte mit 1685 datiert.

Aber was ist eine Totenplatte? Möglicherweise ist das die einzige, die überhaupt existiert. Ich habe jedenfalls kein Hinweise auf andere gefunden. Offenbar wurde sie zur Vorbereitung von Beerdingungen genutzt. Bis zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts brachten die Bewohner der abgelegenen Weiler und Höfe um Naters herum, die in unwegsamen steilen Gebieten lagen und noch nicht mit Strassen erschlossen waren, ihre Toten noch ohne Sarg ins Dorf. Erst hier auf der Totenplatte wurden die Verstorbenen in den Sarg gelegt und verabschiedet und dann zum Friedhof bei der nahe gelegenen Kirche gebracht.
