Ahuriri is a quaint waterfront fishing village where the area is rich in cultural heritage but with a contemporary edge. You can pass the time watching the local fishermen bring in their catch, or have a go at fishing off the wharf yourself.

It was one of the earliest settled areas of Napier, and its shallow but sheltered waters offered safe mooring for sailing ships in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Port Ahuriri was Napier's main port until the 1931 earthquake when port services were relocated to the current site at the Port of Napier. The development of the new Port of Napier, meant Port Ahuriri's focus moved to fishing and recreation. It continues to be well utilised today by the Hawke's Bay fishing fleet and a range of recreational users.

Many of the buildings once occupied by industrial activities related to Port Ahuriri have been developed and now house a variety of commercial, industrial and recreational users. However there are still Fish Markets in the Ahuriri and West Quay area and fresh fish from the port is sold locally in Napier and Hastings.

Excerpt: "Hawkes Bay Seafoods is a vertically integrated seafood company. By that we mean, Hawkes Bay Seafoods are quota holders, vessel operators, fish exporters and importers, seafood processors, wholesalers and retailers.

Hawkes Bay Seafoods is a privately owned seafood company and its main areas of activity consist of fishing, processing – export and wholesale distribution and retailing through an on-site Napier outlet and a world class outlet in Hastings. Hawkes Bay Seafoods is also a large employer within the Hawkes Bay region, employing a combination of full time, part time and seasonal workers.

The entire operation is based on a site which has close proximity to the wharf, about 300 or 400 metres in fact. On that site is a retail premises, a licensed seafood export packhouse; freezing, chilling and processing rooms; live crayfish storage and administration offices and amenities."
