European fishing folk have been based in Dildo since the 1760s. In recent years, the harbour has expanded now that the government wharf is protected by a breakwater. A marina continues to grow and flourish.
Posted co-ordinates are for the government wharf but private docks can be spotted throughout the harbour and beyond. The community supports family-level, commercial fishing. However, trawler-sized vessels can be seen at the processing plant in South Dildo.
For decades, most of the harvest came from the cod fishery. With the collapse of cod stocks, there has been a moratorium in place since 1992. Cod fishing continues but the harvest is restricted to the level of the household. Resale is not permitted. Cod-fishing from boats out of Dildo harbour has almost always used the method of jigging.
Whaling was a profitable local industry in the early twentieth-century until the decline of stocks in the 1950s. The processing plant in South Dildo was originally opened to process whale meat and oil.
The fishing industry here in Dildo in the twenty-first century includes catches of other species such as capelin, scallop, lobster and seal. Each of these species requires different methods of catching.
Waymarkers will have full access to many wharves at the harbour. If you need some refreshment, I recommend the Dildo Dory restaurant.
