One of our favourite places to visit in Sydney is the Fish Market on Blackwattle Bay where we can eat fresh fish and chips and watch the fishing boats moored at the adjacent working fishing port.

Excerpt from the Sydney Fish Market website:
"SFM is also home to the Sydney fishing fleet, made up of ocean fish and deep water prawn trawlers, many of which have been operated by the same family, the Bagnatos, for decades.

While fishing can be a difficult and sometimes dangerous profession with no guarantee of success, these local fishers are typical of those in 300 communities across Australia who passionately devote their lives to supplying SFM with the fresh seafood that goes on to be enjoyed in homes and restaurants across the Sydney region and beyond.

The trawlers are normally at sea for two days per trip, fishing the waters between Newcastle and Wollongong for a wide range of seafood including Octopus, Flathead, Mirror Dory, Leatherjacket and Eastern School Whiting. Some of the vessels go further afield to fish as far south as Ulladulla and as far north as Nelson Bay.

Their catch is sold onsite at SFM’s daily wholesale auction."

Australia’s Home of Seafood, Sydney Fish Market (SFM) is the largest working fish market in the Southern Hemisphere and the third largest fish market in terms of variety in the world.

Every time we visit our family in Sydney we can't wait to revisit this wonderful spot on the waterside beside the Anzac Bridge. There are usually a few fishing boats moored at the jetties in the port with large nets and fishing floats strewn around the decks and always a hungry horde of seagulls keeping a close watch for any scraps. The fish market is always busy with lots of familiar blue crates used to carry the catch into the nearby processing buildings and fish shops. The Market contains several fish shops selling the freshest fish you could ever get, and also delicious cooked fish meals. Our favourite spot is Nicholas Seafood where we can purchase fish and chips and eat them at an outdoor table on the waters-edge, right beside the fishing boats.

Get up early and catch the noisy wholesale fish auctions; they start at 5.30am, with tours for public starting at 6.40am. It’s the largest market of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, and you won’t find more varieties of fish on sale anywhere outside Japan: it trades more than 100 species a day and over 1400 tonnes of fish a year.
