The architects were Paul Bonatz and Friedrich E. Scholer. The cornerstone was laid in 1914, but completion was delayed due to World War I. On October 21, 1922, the station was officially opened, however, work was not entirely completed until the end of 1927.
It was several times damaged in World War II, but restored thereafter.
For the construction, the architect used concrete and steel, which were new materials at that time. The facade is made of shell limestone coming from the town of Crailsheim in Northeastern Baden-Württemberg.
The station serves as a terminus for the Deutsche Bahn railway and also as a hub for the suburban S-bahn network and local light rail U-bahn network. It is classified under monumental protection and is located in downtown Stuttgart, in close proximity to the Königstraße (Stuttgart’s shopping district) and the Palace Gardens, otherwise known as the "Green U" of Stuttgart.
