By 1889, the Jewish population had grown sufficiently to support a congregation, Lovers of Peace, which received its charter from the state four years later in 1893. Another group applied for and received a charter as the Woonsocket Congregation Sons of Israel. The year was 1895. In January of 1902, the Congregation of the Lovers of Peace officially changed its name to B’nai Israel.

In 1962, during the tenure of Samuel Medoff as president, the present beautiful edifice at 224 Prospect Street was dedicated. It was Israel Medoff’s idea that the building honor the Jewish service men and women of Woonsocket who fought in World War II.

B’nai Israel is the third oldest, continuing, independent congregation in Rhode Island, third after Sons of Israel and David (Temple Beth-El) and Jeshuat Israel (Touro Synagogue).
