Opened in 1967, the Avalon Mall is by far the largest indoor-shopping centre in Newfoundland and Labrador. It has the largest food court in Atlantic Canada.
The anchor stores Winners and Sears were once the anchor stores in The Village, St. John's other indoor mall.
The main entrance for the mall includes outdoor signage for Scotiabank. However, the Bank of Nova Scotia is actually all the way across the mall on the Thorburn Road side.
