The West Sands at St.Andrews stretch for two miles northwards from the town to the mouth of the Eden Estuary. The sands cater for most activities and public access is free for all of the year. Dogs are allowed, but no nudes, there are no lifeguards or shops, but there are plentiful public conveniences. The main entrance is at the southern end, close to the 1st fairway of the famous Old Course. Other entrances are limited because of the adjacent dune ridge which is protected. There are plentiful car parks at the south end and another further up West Sands Road which runs parallel to the beach on the west side of the dune ridge. This road goes all the way almost to the end of the beach at Out Head where there is a turning point. The beach has become known in recent times as the setting for the opening scenes in the film Chariots of Fire.
