There has been racing in York since the 16th century with the first recorded racing taking place at the current site in 1731. The Knavesmire is a relatively level track not far south from the centre of York. It was the site in 1739 for the hanging of notorious highwayman Dick Turpin and nowadays is regarded as one of the premier flat only racecourses in the UK. It is also among the largest venues with a capacity of 60,000, although back in the 19th century, 150,000 turned up to witness a match between Voltigeur and Flying Dutchman. It also served as the venue for the start of the second day of the Tour de France in 2014.

The two most significant race meetings of the season are the Dante meeting in May, and the Ebor meeting in August. The May event covers three days from Wednesday to Friday and features the Dante Stakes, a significant trial for the Derby, and the Musidora Stakes, the equivalent for the Oaks. The Ebor meeting covers four days from Wednesday to Saturday and features the Juddmonte International, Nunthorpe Stakes and Yorkshire Oaks, with on the final day the Ebor Handicap, Ebor being the Roman name for York.

There are three distinct enclosures at York, the cheapest being the Course enclosure, this is situated inside the track, and is most popular with families and picnickers, although there is very little shelter on this side. The grandstand and paddock enclosure covers the biggest area of the racecourse and is well catered for, for betting, bars and eating. There is also access to the parade ring as well. The most expensive enclosure is the County Stand which is nearest the finishing line, this has the selection of the most exclusive bars and restaurants, it is also the only enclosure to have a dress code: collared shirt, jacket and tie for gentlemen.

The track itself used to be a horseshoe shape with the longest races being run over 1 mile 6 furlongs, this changed with the building work at Ascot, meaning the Royal fixture moving to York in 2005, and the longer races meant that a loop had to be built linking the near and far sides turning the track into a round course. Most of the best horses have run at York, the latest of which, the unbeaten Frankel has a statue which is situated near the parade ring.
