In Widnsor, at the summit of mt. Ascutney, is a look-out tower that has great views of the mountain peaks and the Connecticut River valley from an elevation of about 3100 ft.

The tower is within the Ascutney State Park. To get there, from I-93, take the exist for Vermont Route 131/US 5 and travel east to the intersection with US 5. Turn left and travel on US 5 to a split on the road where Vermont Route 44A starts. Bear left and travel on Route 44A to the entrance to the park on the left. You must stop at the ranger station and pay a fee. From there, you can go straight up the autoroad to a parking lot at 2800 ft, then walk the final .8 miles to the summit. You can also walk up one of the trails around the mountain. Consult maps for the park. The tower is a little north east of the official summit, which is by a cell tower. The lookout tower is on a ledge, which is covered by short trees. The rating provided is for the walk from the parking lot to the tower. The going is at times steep but constantly. If you start lower, either halfway up or at the base, the rating is at least a 4.5.

The lookout tower is a metal structure with stairs that rise from within the tower footprint to the center of the platform. There are railings on all four sides and fencing around the hole, which makes it hard to get around if there are many people there. On each side is an orientation sign that has a photograph with leaders and text pointing out important features that can be seen. The west provides a view of the spine of the Green Mountain Range. Mt. Killington and Mt. Okemo are prominent. North is Camelhump, also part of the Green Mountains. North east is the White Mountain Range, where major peaks like Mt. Lafayette and Mt. Washington, the tallest mountain in the northeast, are visible. To the east is the Connecticut River valley and the foothills of the White Mountains. Southeaast are the mountains that are part of the Monadnock range, including Mt. Monadnock and Mt. Wachusett in Massachusetts. In between are beautiful views of the landscape that includes trees and farm fields.
