WHO LOST HIS LIFE 26TH DECR A. D. 1869
IN THE GALLANT BUT UNSUCCESSFUL ENDEAVOUR TO SAVE FROM DROWNING TWO GIRLS NAMED BRUIN AND MARTIN WHO HAD FALLEN THROUGH THE ICE ON DEADMAN'S POND, SIGNAL HILL ROAD

A. D. 1870

The text below is taken from the St. John's Daily News, 28 December 1869, page 2.

The festivities usually attendant upon the Christmas season have been marred by the occurrence of a calamity which has thrown a gloom over the whole community.

On Sunday afternoon last, WESTON CARTER, Esq, the eldest son of Hon. F. B. T. Carter, H. M. Attorney General, whilst taking an afternoon walk towards Signal Hill, had his attention arrested by the outcries of two young women, named Broon and Martin, who, it appeared, were amusing themselves on one of the two small lakes in the vicinity of the Hill. -- Both girls had fallen through the ice, and were in extremity when Mr. Carter reached the scene of the disaster. With him, to see the danger was to attempt the rescue, regardless of peril to himself. At once he ran across the yielding ice, which gave way beneath him only after he had grasped one of the poor girls, and was in the act of extricating her from her peril. -- But all too late; he sank with them into a watery grave.

This very sad calamity has thrown a very unusual feeling of gloom over the whole town. Mr. Carter was a young man, not yet even in the prime of life, beloved by all who knew him, for his amiable disposition and manners. It was only during the past term of the Court, that he was admitted to the degree of Barrister-at-Law, with every prospect of a long and honourable career before him. We believe we are safe in saying that the whole community feel his loss, and deeply sympathize with his afflicted parents and relatives, at the irremediable affliction (humanly speaking) which has overtaken them.
